FIFA World Cup 2026 Round 1 Analysis
We’ll keep it short in this quick rundown of the most significant highlights of Round 1 of the World Cup. The undisputed winners of the week were one of the hosts, Mexico, whose two wins have made them the first team through to the round of 32.
Argentina was also one of the teams who might have been surrounded by question marks before the tournament, but who shone when it came to game time, thanks especially to the ageless Lionel Messi and his hat-trick against Algeria.

Finally, no talk about football would be complete without mentioning the Three Lions, who seemed to have been cursed upon arriving in America, with equipment heists, murder mysteries, and tornados all threatening to derail England’s campaign before it even got started. However, Thomas Tuchel’s boys showed more than enough resilience and motivation, seeing as they steamrolled Croatia 4:2 on their way to a dominant win which only bodes well for the rest of the competition. Harry Kane in particular looked like the best player on planet Earth in that game, covering every position except goalkeeper on his way to two goals and a Man of the Match ball.
On the negative, or let’s say unexpected, side of things, quite a few dominant favorites didn’t manage to win their opening matches, with Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, and even Uruguay all drawing games with objectively inferior foes (no knock on the minnows, congratulations on the fighting spirit of course). For these teams, the pressure grows even higher, but for the fans, the action will only get wilder and more exciting!
